Scholarships for IC&C

Scholarships for HITS

There are two categories of scholarships available:


The Jacquelyn Klooster Minor Chords Scholarship (for IC&C)

The Jacquelyn Klooster Minor Chords Scholarship is funded by the family of Jacquelyn Klooster and The Over Tones, Inc.

One scholarship; the value of which shall be $500.00 CAD annually for 10 years.

Purpose: This scholarship is designed to assist Harmony, Inc. youth members who are 23 years of age or under, to attend the International Contest and Convention and to sing with the Minor Chords.

The following Criteria must be met:

  1. The applicant must be a Student member in good standing of Harmony, Inc.

  2. The applicant must be able to arrive at I.C.&C. in time for the rehearsal of the Minor Chords.

  3. The applicant must be a resident of the country in which I.C.&C. is being held.

  4. The applicant cannot have received the scholarship in the previous two years.

This Scholarship shall be administered by the Music Services Administrator.  Applications must be submitted to the Selection Committee by July and decisions will be announced to the applicants by August 15.

The Selection Committee will consist of the Youth Coordinator, the President of The Over Tones, Inc. and Jean Klooster or her designee.   Votes are to be sent to the International Parliamentarian for verification and disposal.  The Parliamentarian will notify the committee of the result.

The Application shall include:

  1. a letter from the applicant describing what belonging to Harmony, Inc. means to her, Harmony Inc. activities/events in which she has been involved, why she wants to attend I.C.&C. and sing with the Minor Chords.

  2. a letter of reference from a member of the applicant’s Chapter

  3. a statement from the President of the Chapter (or Area Representative in the case of an Associate Youth member) indicating that she supports this application

  4. If the applicant is under 18, a letter from her parent(s) or guardian indicating that they support this application, and who will serve as her sponsor at ICC.

Criteria for Selection:

  1. the application is complete

  2. the applicant’s letter indicates enthusiasm for barbershop singing

  3. range of involvement in chorus/area/barbershop activities

  4. supporting letters indicate a strong support of the application

Criteria for Associate Youth Members Selection:

  1. the application is complete

  2. the applicant’s letter indicates enthusiasm for barbershop singing

  3. range of involvement in chorus/area/barbershop activities

  4. supporting letters indicate a strong support of the application

Harmony Inc. Youth Scholarships (for HITS)

One scholarship; the value of the scholarship shall be $500.00.

This scholarship is designed to assist a Harmony, Inc. youth member or potential Harmony Inc. member who is 23 years of age or under, to attend the annual educational event (now referred to as Harmony Intensive Training School - HITS) for the purpose of attaining education in the barbershop style of music.

The following criteria must be met:

  • The applicant must attend the entire session of the school
  • The applicant cannot have received the scholarship in the previous two years
  • The applicant must debrief/conference with the Education Coordinator prior to the close of HITS.

This scholarship shall be administered by the Member Services Administrator

Applications must be submitted to the Selection Committee as described on the Application Form, signed, dated, and postmarked by the deadline March 1st.

The Selection Committee consists of the Member Services Administrator (Chairman), Music Services Administrator and Youth Outreach Coordinator. The selection will be determined by a vote of committee members and the results will be sent to the International Parliamentarian for verification.

All applicants will be notified of the decision of the committee by the Member Services Administrator on or before May 1st. Any questions regarding the scholarship or how to apply may be referred to the Member Services Administrator.

Director / Assistant Director Scholarships (for HITS)

  • Harmony Inc. Sponsored Scholarship
    Two scholarships; the value of each scholarship shall be $500.00.
     
  • Sounds of Harmony Scholarship
    The Sounds of Harmony Education Scholarship is funded by a former Chapter of Harmony, Inc. to assist a director or assistant director to attend HITS each year. The amount to be given annually is $300.00 until the fund is depleted.

These scholarships are designed to assist Harmony, Inc. directors or assistant directors to attend the annual educational event (now referred to as Harmony Intensive Training School - HITS) for the purpose of attaining education in directing skills and musical leadership.

All Harmony, Inc. directors and assistant directors, or their chapter on his/her behalf, may submit an application.

Preference shall be given to those Directors or Assistant Directors who are new and less experienced and to those who do not reside in the Area in which the event is being held. The Selection Committee will also consider an applicant's costs, receptiveness to coaching/training, musical/directing capabilities, length of time in the position of Director/Assistant Director, working relationship with the chorus and potential benefits to the chorus.

The following criteria must be met:

  • Director or assistant director must attend the entire session of the school
  • Director or assistant director must attend classes pertaining to Directors/Musical Leadership
  • Director or assistant director cannot have received the scholarship in the previous two years
  • The applicant must debrief/conference with the Education Coordinator prior to the close of HITS.
  • Applications must be submitted to the Selection Committee as described on the Application Form [PDF .doc], signed, dated, and postmarked by the deadline March 1st.
  • The Selection Committee consists of the Member Services Administrator (Chairman), Music Services Administrator and Education Services Coordinator. This committee may seek additional input from an applicant's Area Representative. The selection will be determined by a vote of committee members and the results will be sent to the International Parliamentarian for verification
  • The applicants will be ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd through the existing scoring system.
  • The Harmony Inc. sponsored scholarship will be awarded to the 1st place applicant and the Sounds of Harmony scholarship will be awarded to the 2nd place applicant.
  • All applicants will be notified of the decision of the committee by the Member Services Administrator on or before May 1st.

First Time Attendee Scholarship for HITS

One scholarship; the value of the scholarship shall be $500.

This scholarship is designed to assist a Harmony, Inc member attend the annual educational event (now referred to as Harmony Intensive Training School - HITS) for the purpose of attaining education in the barbershop style of music.

The following criteria must be met:

  • The applicant must be a first time attendee to HITS
  • The applicant must attend the entire session of the school
  • The applicant must debrief/conference with the Education Coordinator prior to the close of HITS.
  • This scholarship is not open to Youth members of Harmony, Inc.

This scholarship shall be administered by the Member Services Administrator. Applications must be submitted to the Selection Committee as described on the Application Form, signed, dated, and postmarked by the deadline March 1st. The Selection Committee consists of the Member Services Administrator (Chairman), Music Services Administrator and Education Services Coordinator. The selection will be determined by a vote of committee members and the results will be sent to the International Parliamentarian for verification. All applicants will be notified of the decision of the committee by the Member Services Administrator on or before May 1st.
