List Etiquette

Topics of Discussion

PLEASE post only barbershop-related material to the Harmony Connection. If you heard a good computer joke, or have recently received an email chain letter, please resist the temptation to send it to the Harmony Connection.

Computer Virus Warnings

Should I warn everyone about the latest computer virus?! 99 out of 100 Virus Alerts are hoaxes so please do not send this information to the List. If you feel an Alert is legitimate, please bring it to the attention of the List Administrator allowing her to decide if it should be posted or not.

Subject Line

Always fill in the Subject Field of your email so the List has an idea of what your message is about.

Formatting Your Message

Please do not use any control characters in your email. Different systems interpret these differently. What may look nice and clean to you may look garbled to others when you send it out.

Also, you'll find it useful to use a mono-spaced font (where the width of each character is the same), such as courier, when viewing email. When composing email, especially when trying to line up columns of information, than you really should use a mono-spaced font. Otherwise everything will look very crooked to the List.

And, many email systems and text editors allow you to type special characters, like the cents symbol, or curly quotes. Many systems don't know how to interpret these characters and they can cause a lot of confusion when they try to translate them. You should restrict your posting to plain ASCII characters.

Include Quoted Text

Because there are often several subject threads going on at once, it is good practice to include a small portion of the message you're replying to. Some mail services do not include the original message text when selecting reply. Therefore, a reply such “I agree” or “Me too” is often meaningless, since the List doesn’t know which message you're responding to. Just a few lines from the original message is all you will need to put your reply in context.

Replying to the Entire List

When you reply to a post, the return address is automatically filled in so your response is sent to the originator of the message only. If you would like to you’re your response to the entire list, you will need to include harmonyconnection@yahoogroups.com within the “To” field of the email message.

Test Message

Please don't send test messages to the Harmony Connection. If you want to test your ability to post, then compose a paragraph to tell about your latest barbershop experience or something, and post that.

All Uppercase

Please use upper and lower case when composing your posts. The use of uppercase letters has always been reserved for special emphasis and when used for the entire message, it is perceived as SHOUTING.

Posting Show Announcements

If you want to advertise your show, please keep in mind that there are Harmony Connection subscribers throughout the US and Canada (and beyond). Put as many facts as possible in the subject line, especially the date and city, so uninterested subscribers can simply choose to not read that message, based on the subject line.

Sending Attachments

The Harmony Connection is set up to not receive attachments.
