The Overview Effect
When we stand together, the view changes
|
|
|
|
I recently came across an old interview with US astronaut Ron Garan, who spent 178 days aboard the International Space Station in 2011. He spoke about the well-documented and transformative “overview effect” that reshaped his understanding of humanity and our shared responsibility for Earth. And – like so many stories that catch my attention – it immediately made me think of barbershop. Yes, really!
From 250 miles above Earth, Garan watched storms and auroras “crawling and rippling” across continents. He saw our atmosphere as a fragile, paper‑thin halo - our only protection. What struck him wasn’t just the beauty; it was the truth that everything on Earth is connected. Pollution has no nationality. Climate systems ignore borders. From space, the planet looks like a single, shared spacecraft, with billions of us relying on the same life‑support system. And yet, as Garan observed, many people behave like passengers rather than caretakers, assuming someone else will keep things running.
His message wasn’t abstract. It was practical. If humanity continues to treat Earth as an unlimited resource rather than a shared system, the consequences will reach everyone. Seeing Earth from space didn’t make him feel small; it made him feel accountable. When you truly understand that we’re all riding the same fragile “spacecraft” through the universe, the idea of “us versus them” dissolves into a single truth: there is only us.
In Harmony, Inc., we experience our own version of that revelation every time we gather. We may not orbit the planet, but we do navigate the very real complexities that remind us how divided the world can feel: border crossings that require patience and paperwork, exchange rates that stretch budgets, travel logistics that test our creativity, and - perhaps most delicate of all - political forces beyond our control.
And yet we choose to come together. We choose to cross those lines, literal and figurative, because the harmony on the other side is worth it.
When we finally stand together, the view changes. The challenges melt into the sound of voices locking chords. In that moment, we experience our own overview effect - the divisions that felt so large on the ground dissolve into shared purpose. Harmony becomes our reminder that we are not passengers; we are caretakers of one another, of our community, of the fragile systems (both musical and human) that sustain us.
Ron Garan reminds us that there is only us. Harmony proves it every time we sing together.

The IBOD is excited to learn that there are wonderful leaders in our midst, but we are not sure of their names. From now until March 10, I will be accepting names of people you believe would make great leaders.
Do you know someone who may have the qualifications to serve on the International Board? If so, please share their name with me by email or direct them to fill in the HAR-034 (part 1) form on our website. A member of the committee will reach out to them to discuss their qualifications and potential interest in board service.
You are most welcome to “self-nominate”. If you are interested in serving a two-year term on the International Board of Directors, please complete the Expression of Interest application (HAR-034 part 1) by March 10 or reach out to me for information.

Introducing Harmony's new
Member Operations Manager
Taralee Lashway
By Julie Schwingbeck, VP Membership
I am thrilled to report that the call for a volunteer for the new Member Operations Manager position has been answered by Taralee Lashway!
Most of Taralee's 11-year tenure with Harmony, Inc. has included volunteer leadership. Within a year of joining the organization, she was volunteering at the chapter level. Soon after that, she went on to volunteer at the International level as Music Coordinator and followed that up with a stint on the International Board of Directors. While she was on the Board of Directors, she served as the Director of Membership Experience, which positioned her well to oversee the membership support functions and facilitate teamwork of the membership operations team as Member Operations Manager.
A fun fact about Taralee is that she previously served in the Navy and sang the National Anthem on several air shows. After entertaining the audience musically, she would then go up in the control tower and direct planes as the Air Traffic Controller!
Taralee volunteers because Harmony, Inc. gives her connection, purpose, and a place to grow. She wants to give back to the community that empowers women to find their voices both musically and personally. She loves being part of building something meaningful. She finds that contributing behind the scenes so that the music can thrive is so rewarding and loves helping women feel strong, capable, and heard. The music is the vehicle, but the transformation is the magic.
Taralee's favorite volunteer experience was working at Harmony Fest West and connecting with participants. She shared that their excitement and sense of belonging were contagious, and it was powerful to see how much the experience meant to them.
Believing deeply in the mission of Harmony and the impact it has on women's confidence, connection, and growth is what inspires Taralee to volunteer. She encourages those considering volunteering to "go for it"! She says, "Harmony, Inc. thrives because of members who step forward. You'll gain deeper connections, develop new skills, and help create some truly memorable experiences". She notes that knowing that her efforts contribute to a supportive, empowering environment makes it all worthwhile.
I am thrilled to have Taralee as the first Member Operations Manager, as I'm sure she will mold the position to be fully aligned with the mission of Harmony, Inc. Please welcome, Taralee!

| Susan Trenchard Service Award |
|
|
|
By Debbi Durfey, Quartet Development Coordinator
It’s that time of year again! We are looking for deserving quartet nominations for the Susan C. Trenchard Service Award.
The purpose of this award is to recognize the years of service to Harmony, Inc., the chapter, and the community by one of Harmony's registered quartets. It is not intended that this should be an award only for those who have reached a high rank in contest, although such achievement would not disqualify a quartet from consideration. Rather, it is for the unselfish giving of time and energies of the quartet members and their quartet as a group who are, through actions rather than words, living Harmony's "Blend with Friendship".
I know you appreciate your hard-working quartets. Let them know how much you appreciate them. Please use form HAR-136. If you have any questions, please contact me.

The Leaky Bucket
WHAT:
Membership totals tell only part of the story. The “leaky bucket” metaphor highlights what happens beneath the top-line number.
SO WHAT?
If you track only how many members you have, you may miss how many are quietly cycling through.
NOW WHAT?
Look beyond net growth. Consider how much movement is happening in and out of your chorus and what that pattern might be telling you.
