Harmony Fest West: What A Dream Can Do |
|
|
|

PIONEERS! - We know we've talked a lot about Harmony Fest West, but - WOW! did Harmony Fest West turn out even better than we imagined. Congratulations to the entire team, including our guests, the visionary Angie Beatty-Ringo, the convention team, Expansion Area Manager Jeanne O'Connor, HI President Gaye LaCasce, and Executive Director Kelly Peterson, plus all of the other FUTURE guests on the team. We are excited to see Harmony, Incorporated expand westward and bring more women into our special brand of joy!
What a Dream Can Do
Area 7 in the making!
By Allison Thompson, ICC Convention Manager
How many times have you sung What a Dream Can Do? Probably more than you can count. But have you ever really heard the lyrics? I’ll be honest — I’ve never been able to remember the words, much less pause to reflect on them. That all changed last week at Harmony Fest West.
“For Harmony’s our gift to share, because of dreamers who would dare.”
Suddenly, those words had new meaning. We saw the dream of Harmony, Inc. come alive right in front of us. We felt the spirit of our founders in every moment, and their vision was made real in ways that took our breath away.
The warmth and love of Harmony shone brightly throughout the weekend, from the opening reception to the tag contest, the pattern, and even through the webcast. There was something special in the air, something unmistakable and unforgettable.
In conversations with attendees, four moments stood out that captured the heart of this historic event:
• Members of the California Note Catchers shared their pure joy in finally feeling like they belonged, like they were truly part of something with Harmony.
• A festival quartet walked off stage and joined Harmony, Inc. on the spot — because of the way the audience welcomed and supported them.
• At an after-dinner photo op with everyone from the West Coast, an impromptu chant broke out: “Area 7… Area 7!” It was spontaneous, proud, and full of love.
• And then, at the closing showcase, we stood together — Harmony, Inc. members singing What a Dream Can Do —and really feeling it. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room. We knew, in that moment, that we had just made HI-story.
A full recap is coming soon, but I couldn’t wait to share just a glimpse of what this weekend meant — not only to those who attended in person, but to every Harmony, Inc. member who felt its ripple effects. This was more than an event. It was a milestone. A movement. A memory that changed lives.
“We stand as proof it’s true — of what a dream can do.”
Here’s to the dreamers who dared. And here’s to all of us who carry that dream forward.

Honoring the past while charting the future
Harmony cultivates a culture of resilience
By Gaye LaCasce, International President
You’ve read Allison Thompson’s vivid and moving description of Harmony Fest West. Harmony Fest West wasn’t just a convention; it was a declaration that we are not only rooted in legacy, but also reaching forward with intention. It was a bold move that redefined what’s possible for Harmony, Incorporated.
By stepping outside our traditional boundaries (Area 6 was established more than 30 years ago!), we affirmed that our reach is not limited by geography, but expanded by imagination, courage, and collective belief in our mission and culture. This event represents change, and as I’ve written before, change can feel daunting. But it’s also the very thing that allows Harmony to flourish and adapt in ways we’ve only imagined.
Yes, this event came with financial risk - but growth and financial responsibility aren’t opposing forces; they are twin pillars of sustainability. The risks were real, yet they were met with strategic planning, creative problem-solving, new partnerships, and a generous community willing to rise to the occasion. It was a carefully considered step, grounded in the belief that growing our community means meeting people where they are and creating opportunities for singing connections in more places.
The strength of our organization comes not from staying still, but from staying true - to inclusivity, to our culture, and to one another. By supporting Harmony Fest West, your IBOD demonstrated leadership, with both vision and commitment.
This bold undertaking was brought to life by people who dared to dream - and then did the work to turn vision into reality. As Allison said, our Harmony song, What a Dream Can Do, resonates more deeply than ever. I will never again simply “recite” those lyrics. That song is a testament to the courage, hope, and leadership that ushered us into a new chapter, as well as into other inflection points earlier in our history. From the very first note sung in a new setting, we proved that Harmony is not confined by geography, but defined by spirit. We honored our past while charting a future that belongs to us all - current members, future singers, and every voice yet to discover the joy of belonging to Harmony.
To ensure Harmony thrives for generations to come, we must continue cultivating a culture of resilience. That means making financial stewardship a shared priority, encouraging creativity in fundraising, and aligning our resources with our values. What a Dream Can Do isn’t just a song, it’s our guidepost - a dream made real not only by those who dared to imagine, but by a community willing to evolve together.
The next verse of our shared song may sound a little different than it did thirty years ago, but it carries the same passion, the same purpose, and the same promise: that Harmony belongs to all of us.

CELEBRATING HARMONY AREA CONVENTIONS & CONTESTS
The HI Note is happy to bring to you accounts of the contests and shenanigans at each of our Harmony Area conventions. This week, we travel to Area 4. |

Knock our socks off!
By Tami Clark, Area 4 PR Coordinator
Imagine knitting a sock: four needles begin the journey, but three do the intricate dance, sometimes narrowing to two, with a final needle to seamlessly bind it all. The outcome is always a unique, functional expression of yourself, a visible comfort that warms and adds a flourish of style.
And so it was at our Area 4 Contest, June 12-15, where we emphatically "knocked our socks off!" We had months of diligent rehearsals, soaring in four-part harmony, then meticulously honing those chords in trios and duets, and finally, bringing in our expert coaches to stitch every element into perfection. The result was a spectacular showcase of the unique spirit and talent that defines Harmony, Inc.!
A Symphony of Song and Style
Friday night the stage brimmed with talent as sixteen quartets unraveled the notes on the page and rang those chords with beauty and style. Their performances were a vibrant tapestry, featuring beloved tunes from the Great American Songbook, some modern classics, and timeless Barbershop Standards.
We're thrilled to announce that seven quartets from Area 4 will be crossing the International Stage in November, ready to share their incredible harmonies with the world! A huge congratulations to:
-
Blue Phoenix
-
Bourbon Town Sound
-
It’s About Time
-
Limitless Quartet
-
Ring True
-
Sweet Addiction
-
Violet Sky
And a special round of applause goes to First Place quartet, Blue Phoenix, who took home the prestigious Area 4 Kaleidoscope Award! They truly knocked our socks off with their outstanding performance.
Choruses Take the Stage
Saturday brought an entirely new wave of excitement as the stage filled with over 200 voices! Seven incredible choruses blended, moved, and told their stories, creating an electric atmosphere. The energy was absolutely fantastic!
A huge "Well done!" goes out to St. Louis Vocal Project, who earned First Place Chorus!
We're incredibly proud that four choruses are now heading to IC&C:
-
Bluegrass Harmony
-
Lake Ridge Legacy
-
St. Louis Vocal Project
- The Village Vocal Chords
More Than Just a Contest!
AC&C is so much more than just showcasing our diligence in the Barbershop craft. The Afterglow, engaging education courses, vital area meetings, the lively quartet mixer, and all the spontaneous tag singing and blending of voices—these are the moments that truly graft talent and friendship into beautiful fibers. It was in these times that socks were not only knocked off, but sent soaring to the stratosphere! When those socks landed, we gathered and sent a large donation for Visit BN to distribute to Bloomington/Normal area charities. Our appreciation for the time, wisdom, and talent of our judging panel is truly dyed deep in the wool.
We also celebrated some special achievements:
- The Membership Award, for the highest percentage of growth, went to Bluegrass Harmony .
The Best In Show Award, for the most entertaining Afterglow act that brilliantly captured our convention theme, was awarded to Spirit of Michigan. They truly took us back to the days of Laugh-In—with the perfect set, hilarious hosts, jokes, and all!

|
|
|
We even enjoyed a fantastic Sock Hop, where singing, dancing, and celebrating all of our accomplishments wound our skein of harmony and sisterhood, strengthening the bonds that will sustain us until we meet again.

Donor Spotlight: Ingrid Clark |
|
|

Donor honours father with gift of lyrics to Harmony
Our members show their love of Harmony in many ways, whether through monthly donations or our annual giving or sharing the gift of music.
Ingrid Clark of The Over Tones, created and received a copyright license for the lyrics to Grief’s Hallelujah and has given her lyrics to members of Harmony, Inc. They are intended to be sung as the last two verses of Hallelujah, using the arrangement by Jordan Travis for Barbershop choruses and quartets, derived from Leonard Cohen’s composition.
We reached out to Ingrid to learn more about this beautiful tribute gift. She shares, “The lyrics were inspired by the passing of my father, Roger Clark, in February of 2025. The Over Tones, Inc. Music Director Bonnie Morton offered me an opportunity to scribe two verses of alternate lyrics for Hallelujah, with a June Memorial Service performance in mind.
"I drew on our Dad's rapidly failing health to inspire my pen. It put me in a reflective frame of mind. The resulting lyrics were sung beautifully by my sister at Dad's Funeral in February, bringing tears for many.
"The Over Tones then lent their voices to the lyrics at a meaningful Rockwood Memorial Service.”
These two verses are suitable for use at a memorial or funeral service. The verses are meant to be substituted for the original lyrics immediately before and after the key change when using Jordan Travis’ arrangement.
Ingrid provides the following inspirational message, “Thank you for thinking of Dad, along with your loved ones, when you sing Grief's Hallelujah from your heart. I hope the lyrics move you, as they have others."
On behalf of all our members in Harmony, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to Ingrid and her family. Harmony is grateful for Ingrid’s generosity and sharing her beautiful lyrics with us.
The revised lyrics and arrangement can be found in Songs Page on the Harmony, Inc. website.

Administrative Leadership Mentoring Program |

Looking for “Mentees”
By Sara Stone, Administrative Leadership Mentoring Coordinator
“I think mentors are important and I don’t think anybody makes it in the world without some form of mentorship. Nobody makes it alone. Nobody has made it alone. And we are all mentors to people even when we don’t know it.” - Oprah Winfrey
I’m excited to share more news about the launch of a pilot mentoring program for future leaders! Administrative Leadership is broadly defined as developing leadership skills in our members so that they feel confident, better prepared, and more readily available to assume leadership positions within Harmony, Inc.
We will pilot the program this year, specifically focused on building leadership skills at the Chapter level. The first step in this process was recruiting Mentors. Currently, I have six mentors signed up to participate! Now, I’m ready to open this program for members who would like to be matched with a mentor to develop our future leaders. I’ve developed a questionnaire for prospective mentees to identify the leadership skills they would like to develop and what leadership positions they aspire to in Harmony, Inc.
For this initial pilot, I’m specifically interested in people who would like to assume CHAPTER leadership positions; however, if you’re interested in ANY leadership position within Harmony, Inc., please still apply. I’m going to match the first six people who apply with a focus on chapter leadership positions, and if those who apply want a Mentor for other leadership positions, I may still be able to match you with someone.
Here are some initial answers to questions you may have:
Q – How much time will this commitment take?
A – minimum of 1-2 hours a month for 6 months working on specific skills, primarily via Zoom
Q – When will the program start?
A – Once I receive the questionnaires from both Mentors and Mentees, I will perform a “matching” process and contact both parties of the match. The projected start date is September 2025, with the pilot ending in March 2026.
Q – Is there a training program?
A – I have developed training for both mentors and mentees. This training is approximately an hour long via Zoom. It will be scheduled after I perform the matches of mentors with mentees.
Please consider taking advantage of this program to develop your skills and expertise to become a future leader. If you are interested in signing up as a mentee, please drop me an email at sestonemsu@gmail.com, and I will send you a link to complete the mentee questionnaire. To start the program in September, please send your application by August 8, 2025.
NOTE: There is still time to sign up to be a mentor in this program! Just send an email to me at the same email address above, clearly stating that you’re interested in becoming a mentor, and I will send a link for the mentor questionnaire.
"While I made my living as a coach, I have lived my life to be a mentor - and to be mentored! – constantly. Everything in the world has been passed down. Every piece of knowledge is something that has been shared by someone else. If you understand it as I do, mentoring becomes your true legacy. It is the greatest inheritance you can give to others. It is why you get up every day – to teach and be taught." -John Wooden

The OverTones, Inc. Double in Size! |
|
|
|
2024 SANDI WHITE MEMORIAL AWARD
Over Tones double in size!
By Rosemarie (Rosie) Châles, Public Relations & Marketing Chair
The Over Tones had an amazing 50% growth with 13 new members for a current total of 26! This increase includes three brand-new members to Harmony, Inc., one member who returned after a time away, and an impressive nine dual members who also belong to three neighbouring Harmony, Inc. choruses — Chord Spinners, A Cappella Showcase, and Nickel City Sound.
We’re a tight-knit, warm and welcoming group that takes our craft seriously — but never at the expense of fun! Our rehearsals are filled with laughter, celebration, and a sense of camaraderie that ensures every member is included in the joy of singing.
In January and September of 2024, we ran two successful membership campaigns, offering 4 - 6 weeks of free rehearsals. PR and Marketing Chair Rosie Châles designed eye-catching materials to attract new members, ensuring wide visibility by posting on over 50 Facebook group pages. A Facebook-sponsored ad also helped amplify our reach, while Musical Director Bonnie Morton personally engaged with each registrant. This increase in membership is the result of a true team effort to grow our chorus.
The key to this remarkable growth was the warm, supportive environment fostered by our members and leadership teams. New members were seamlessly integrated into chorus life, encouraged to contribute based on their musical or other talents—whether by joining the Music Team or helping with tasks like running the 50/50 draw. They were quickly placed on the risers, with weekly director’s notes sent to keep them in the loop, and the first hour of each rehearsal was dedicated to their integration. The audition process, carefully guided by our director, was both thorough and considerate, ensuring a welcoming experience. Prospective members saw firsthand that there was a place for everyone, and that all were embraced with open arms.
A special thanks goes to:
- our dedicated membership team, led by VP/Membership Chair Ann Meredith, who greets potential members with warmth and a bright smile, ensuring they feel at ease and even arranging rides when needed.
- our musical director, whose passion for growth shines through. She updated our repertoire with fresh new songs and worked alongside our PR gal to spotlight our chorus on Facebook and other social media platforms.
- President Karen Atkinson for ensuring the smooth operation of every aspect of our membership recruitment and retention process — like a well-oiled singing machine!
Based in Guelph, Ontario, The Over Tones, Inc. is a vibrant and inclusive chorus that warmly welcomes women of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures. We embrace individuals who identify as female, as well as those who now identify as nonbinary and feel at home in our women-centered community. As we approach our 60th Anniversary next year, we’re excited to celebrate this remarkable milestone with an exciting lineup of activities to mark the occasion!
We rehearse from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Wednesday evenings. Come check us out!
