Leaning into joy
New musical experiences open new worlds
By Gaye LaCasce, International President
Some of you may know (because I may have shouted it from a nearby mountaintop!) that we have a new granddaughter named Berkley. Bellamy is now a big sister - she proudly says she has a sib-i-ling (in three syllables!) All is well, and we are grateful for good health and for all the sweet messages we’ve received.
On a related note, having a talkative 3-year-old granddaughter has stretched my intellect and my imagination. She – and now Berkley – have shown me how to “lean into” joy, even during dark days – literally and figuratively. Here’s a great example.
Bellamy (thanks to her mommy and aunt) loves Taylor Swift. While I appreciated what I’d read about Taylor’s work ethic and philanthropy, I wasn’t very familiar with her music.
Then there’s K-Pop… how many of you know that genre, which has been around since the 1990s? I didn’t. But Bellamy is enamored with the recent animated musical K-Pop Demon Hunters – the soundtrack of which was nominated for multiple Grammy Awards.
Here’s the connection: I love music of many kinds, but Taylor Swift and K-Pop are two musical experiences I probably would not have explored without a little encouragement. Bellamy’s requests to listen, dance, and sing along (over and over and over!) have helped me discover the joy in both - and to appreciate the joy they bring to her. Rather than becoming the archetypal aging curmudgeon who mutters, “Is that music?” or “Back in my day…” I genuinely want to learn what’s new in the musical world.
I’m currently watching a six-part documentary about the making of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Her vision, drive, generosity, and ability to connect with fans are second to none. We as barbershoppers could learn a few lessons from her about authenticity, show production, and audience engagement. She is also a role model for girls – a principled young woman who has built an ethical, thoughtful, and wildly successful business. Her musical versatility and exceptional talent are on full display.
K-Pop Demon Hunters was another surprise. I was initially skeptical, but the animated film’s good‑versus‑evil storyline - featuring a girl band whose journey leads to self‑acceptance (and therefore victory) - won me over. The music has become an earworm, with soaring melodies, danceable rhythms, and empowering lyrics. Before Bellamy’s influence, if someone had asked whether I’d like to listen to K-Pop, I probably would have politely demurred. Now I’m grateful that she (and her family) discovered and shared this music with me.
Have you been in the audience of a barbershop show or contest and heard an arrangement you didn’t recognize? Maybe you even leaned over and asked your neighbor, “Is that barbershop?” The answer is undoubtedly yes. Just as our parents probably questioned our musical tastes, we may find ourselves reacting to songs we hadn’t yet heard “barbershopped.” But keeping an open mind and embracing the evolution of our artform (and our organization) is healthy. It’s what will allow us to thrive in perpetuity, for our children and grandchildren.
And to any budding arranger out there: I’m all in for K-Pop or T. Swift. Let me know!

CATEGORY TRAINING SCHOOL 2026...
is a wrap!
By Kathy Greason, ICJC
Good news! Category Training School 2026 at the Debert Hospitality Center in Nova Scotia is in the rearview mirror, and your Contest and Judging folks are ready. Bring on contest season 2026!
Your ACJCs took to their training remotely, zooming from as far away as Florida and Arizona. They “attended” general sessions at the CTS location in Debert, Nova Scotia, conferred with the ADM judges, and, under the guidance of facilitator Linda Hilko, discussed challenges and solutions in their jobs, all with an eye to continuing to provide the best possible contest experience for our ensembles. They even invited former ACJCs to join them for a little on-line social time. This was the first CTS for Jennifer Palus (Area 6), Jan Coffin (Area 1) and Judy Castle (Expansion Area), as they are all overseeing their very first Area contests this year. Fortunately, Team ACJC is a true team, with ACJCs always ready to provide support and help to other team members on a moment’s notice.
On site, our ICJC Committee organized a terrific school, if I do say so myself. Our Training Coordinator and our On-Site Coordinator, with a cadre of volunteers, worked tirelessly to be sure logistics didn’t get in the way of learning. With the help of consultants Steve Tramack, Joe Hunter, Jordan Travis and Steve Armstrong (by Zoom), our Category Specialists kept the knowledge and information coming. Participation from local ensembles – Connect 4, Lookin’4 Treble, Bijoux, and Cobequid Fun-Tones – allowed scoring judges to practice evaluation skills live. And thanks to the ADM judges, we even had a successful mock contest…
We celebrated milestones of judging service. Our ensembles sing and perform better because Renée Tramack and Sandi Wright have been serving us as judges for 15 years. Anne Bureau has been offering musicality expertise for 20 years. And Diane Patterson, as a judge dually certified by Harmony, Inc., has been helping us run contests smoothly for 20 years and offering expertise in the performance area for 40 years.
We also acknowledged Theresa Weatherbee’s 13 years of guiding the Performance Category. She returned to “just plain judge” status at the end of the school, handing the reins over to our new Performance Category Specialist, Sandi Wright.
Importantly, your judges are ready! Every previously certified judge who attended CTS is recertified. Hallelujah! But let’s talk about status changes, too.
In the Administrative Judge Category, Pam Ringo advanced from applicant to candidate status. Elizabeth Houghton continues on her steady path through the candidate process. And Rachel McIntyre? We have a new Administrative Judge! She may be coming to an Area near you this year.
What about the Performance Category? Well, Shannon Shelton-Muller advanced from applicant to candidate status. Paige Sgrignoli and Jennifer Weigl enter their second year as candidates, so contestants this year will be hearing from them in evaluations. And what about Stacy Hugman? She’s a certified Performance Judge! That will be her you see wearing a green badge with her name on it.
And in the Musicality Category, we have a new judge, too! Jennifer Cleveland successfully completed CTS, and received her red badge at the closing ceremony.
The good news keeps coming. Our two 2026 applicants in the Singing Category advanced to candidate status at the close of school. That means some of you will see Richard Lewellen and Dan Signor practicing at Harmony, Inc. contests this year. And we have yet another new judge! Susan Ives is a certified Singing Judge as of CTS 2026, blue badge and all!
That’s the big news from Debert. With help from Team ACJC and certified judges from other barbershop organizations, Harmony, Inc.’s 28 active certified judges, as well as our candidates, stand ready to work with our contestants to make 2026 the best contest season ever (or at least another great one!).

Please note the following updates (ACC 2026):
The process for entering the Area Contests consists of the following steps. Note change in order of completion from last year.
Step 1: Complete HAR-061 (Quartet) or HAR-063 (Chorus) to verify contestant information and pay contest entry fees according to the deadlines below.
Step 2: Enter your ensemble details in the Contest Entry system. You will receive an email reminder to complete this step approximately five days after submitting HAR-061 or HAR-063. Contact info@harmonyinc.org if you do not receive this email within one week of paying your contest entry fees.
Please note Step 2 has been delayed due to Barberscore issues. As long as you have completed HAR-061/HAR-063 and made your payment by the contest entry deadline you have been entered into the contest. We apologize for this inconvenience.
Step 3: Submit your Song Registration form(s) for any songs you intend to perform in the contest thirty (30) days prior to the contest.
If, after you receive the step 2 email reminder, you have issues completing the Contest Entry DO NOT CONTACT the BHS Member Center. Instead, complete a support ticket request. You will be contacted by Administrative Judge Category Specialist, Linda Muise to resolve any issues. Please note that your issue may not be resolved immediately. Tickets will be addressed in order of contest dates. Area 6 issues will be addressed first, Area 2 issues second, Area 3 issues third, etc. Please be patient.

| Welcome New Chapter Development Coordinator |
|
|
|

Leinen accepts NCDC appointment
By Julie Schwingbeck, VP of Membership
It is with great pleasure that I introduce to you all the recently appointed New Chapter Development Coordinator, Anne Leinen!
Anne is no stranger to volunteering for Harmony, Inc., as she has been assisting at the International level for 13 years! Originally, she says, she started volunteering because she wanted to give back to an organization that had brought her so much joy over the years. She's so grateful to all the volunteers who make our organization what it is today.
The New Chapter Development Coordinator job is perfect for her as her favorite part of volunteering for Harmony, Inc. is meeting new people and making new friends. What a wonderful ambassador she will be as she meets all the new people who are investigating forming a chapter with Harmony, Inc. She brings to the job vast experience with Harmony, Inc. as both a quartet and chorus singer. She is a three-time Harmony Queen with Four in Accord, Soundwave, and Upstate Rhythm and is a chorus member with the Crystal Chords.
Anne's favorite memory from her volunteer experience came when serving as the IC&C Volunteer Manager. One of her recruits approached her at the end of convention and thanked her for giving her the volunteer job. The recruit had SO much fun and said it was the best part of the whole convention, and she couldn’t wait to do it again next year. Anne still smiles when she thinks about that conversation. Her advice to anyone considering volunteering with Harmony, Inc. is, "Jump in! You’ll learn a lot about Harmony, Inc and what makes it special in the barbershop community. You’ll gain a new appreciation for the talent within HI. You’ll meet amazing people."
We are so fortunate to have Anne in this position. I foresee a great experience for our prospective chapters coming down the pipeline!

|

|
New Year, New Members
How to calculate new member dues
We’ve rung in a brand new year, but the membership year for Harmony, Inc. is drawing to a close. As we get closer to annual membership renewals, chapters are reminded that new members added in the last quarter (January through March) are charged pro-rated dues for the current year plus the full dues amount for the coming year. This policy saves the new member money, prevents the chapter from needing to ask new members to remit corporate dues twice in quick succession, and eases some of the workload in the corporate offices at a very busy time of the year.
The Record of Membership form will calculate the correct amount based on the month the new member joins. Members added to the chapter during these three months will be in good standing through March of 2027. You'll find a handy dues estimator here and a table of current dues and fees on the Forms page of the website.
If you have any questions or need help, please reach out to Kelly or Angie at info@harmonyinc.org.

Animal Guides
WHAT:
Everyday leadership shows up in how we speak, especially when things get tense. This article uses five animal metaphors to explore different communication instincts you can draw on in rehearsals, meetings, and chorus life.
SO WHAT?
Under stress, most of us default to familiar habits. A small shift in language can slow things down, build trust, and reset a conversation.
NOW WHAT?
Meet the Owl, Elephant, Bee, Horse, and Cat. Notice which instincts you rely on most, and try one new approach the next time tension creeps in.

Warm Voices for a Cold Day:
Island A Cappella in Concert February 21
Island A Cappella, Prince Edward Island’s renowned women’s barbershop chorus, invites you to Warm Voices for a Cold Day — an uplifting concert of four-part harmonies and joyful performances on Saturday, February 21 at 2:00 p.m. at Park Royal United Church, Charlottetown, PEI.
This heartwarming afternoon concert will feature a cappella music in the barbershop style, performed by Island A Cappella’s dynamic, multi-generational chorus, along with special guest performers, quartet Q Knew, and multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Ross Malcolm Boyd, adding their talents to the mix.
Founded in 1982 as the Abegweit Chimes, the Harmony, Inc. chorus rebranded as Island A Cappella in 2014 and has earned a reputation as a well-loved entertainment organization across the province. The group regularly performs at festivals, churches, community events, fundraisers, and special occasions, delighting audiences with a warm, engaging, and distinctive sound.
“Our winter concert is all about connection and comfort,” says Chorus Director Jamie Feinberg. “We’ve chosen a program of songs we think will brighten the day for our audience and even offer an opportunity for folks to sing along with us and discover the joy that singing always brings, regardless of the weather.”
“For over 40 years, Island A Cappella has brought people together through music,” says Chorus President Brenda Smith. “Warm Voices for a Cold Day reflects who we are — a chorus that values connection, collaboration, and sharing great music with our community.” Tickets for the concert are $20 per person, available online via Eventbrite or at the door, with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to Blooming House Women’s Shelter. For tickets and more information, visit islandacappella.ca.
