Spring brings new beginnings
By Linda Brehaut, International President
The middle of March has arrived with a time-change for many of us. Spring is on the way for sure!
Somehow March 1 or April 1 seems to be another “beginning” (just like September and January). Many of our chapters are looking at details for their annual meetings and setting a new slate of officers.
I wanted to take a moment to thank each and every person that allows their name to stand to serve as a leader in your chapter. These positions are critical to the support and progress of the chapter.
Volunteering to give that extra time and focus is not always easy, but I assure you the payback is worth it.
Payback, you ask? Yes!
Whether you realize it or not, you are growing as leaders, as mentors, as support to an organization that is rooted in volunteers. You will find that at least one person in your chapter will see you as a role model and they, too, may very well step out of their comfort zone one day and take on a leadership role in your chapter – that is growth!
This organization not only encourages us to grow musically, but as individuals. For that, I am grateful. My time in this organization has seen me grow from a member on a committee, to being the chair, to a member of the Music Team, Board of Directors, Area Council, and then the IBOD! I am no different than you – I learned from my Harmony friends that even though we might think we have nothing more to offer, in time, Harmony discovers our hidden potential.
I send a huge thank you for sharing your talents, both on and off the risers.

Quartet Corner: Welcome, Uptown Sound! |

Welcome to Area 4's
Uptown Sound!
By Jessica Jones, Quartet Development Coordinator
Hailing from Central Illinois, Southern Illinois, and Florida, Uptown Sound has many years of quartet experience with Sweet Adelines, International and are very excited to broaden their horizons to include Harmony, Inc.
Kim Hughes (bass), has 25 years of barbershop experience with the SAI Vermilion Valley Show Chorus in Pontiac, IL. In that time, she has been in several quartets and served many chorus roles including team member, music team, and Assistant Director. A special education administrator, single mom of two teenagers, and owner of a small livestock farm, Kim needed more to do in her “spare time.” She is excited to get back into quartetting to become a better singer and experience something new as a Harmony, Inc. member.
Tina Gleason (bari), is a founding member of Coastal Voices, a newly formed Harmony, Inc. chorus in Fort Myers, FL. With 15 years experience with SAI, she was looking for something different - and she found it! Tina has sung with two other quartets that each performed and competed for five years. As a marketing professional, she spends a lot of time on the road, which is a great time to listen to tracks and quartet recordings.
Krista Chmiel (lead) is a barbershop brat from Central Illinois, who recently relocated to Southern Illinois to a five-acre farm with her husband and two sons. She is also the mother of Uptown Sound’s tenor, Anneka. She has been a member of SAI since 1986 when she was in high school and permitted to join Vermillion Valley Show Chorus in Pontiac, IL. Having two music teacher parents made Krista a triple threat in the musical theater industry. She is a musical and chorus choreographer, SAI Certified Director, composer, arranger, cosmetologist, and a vocal music educator with a master's degree in vocal performance. She has sung with each member of Uptown Sound in other quartets but this is the first this foursome is officially singing together!
Anneka Carlson (tenor), has ten years of barbershop experience at 22 years old! She was introduced to this “hobby” as a child as her mom, Krista, and grandmother are both Sweet Adelines. This is Anneka’s second quartet. As a licensed insurance agent, she has a focused approach to this upcoming competition and is ready for action.
The quartet looks forward to meeting new people in HI as well as greeting old friends. They can’t wait to see everyone at Area 4 AC&C!
